Motihari, the district headquarter of East-Champaran, Bihar, India has its own place in the Indian History. It is the place from where Gandhijee, “The Father of Nation”, had started his “Satyagraha”, a revolution against the British Rule for the Independence of India, by the means of non-violence and will for Truth, with the support of the people of Motihari.

The people of Motihari believe that the name “Motihari” is given after the two names of its ancient kings – “Moti Singh” and “Hari Singh”.

As history says, the origin of Motihari is its old district, Champaran. The word “Champaran” consists of two words. – “champak” and “aranya”. “Champak” means the flower ‘Champa’(Mongolia)(yellow-colored, scented flower) and “Aranya” means forest. So the word “Champaran” means the forest of Champa trees. This Champaran was so famous that it gave birth the famous Upanishad – “Brihdaranyaka Upanishad” – which is the longest among all Upanishads, by its eminent saints of its ancient time. In the year 1971, this Champaran district was divided into two small districts – “East-Champaran” (“Purbi-Champaran”) and “West-Champaran” (“Paschim-Champaran”). Motihari is the district headquarter of East-Champaran where as Bettiah is the district headquarter of West-Champaran.

Motihari, ultimately its district East-Champaran is bounded by Nepal and 5 states of Bihar, India. They are – Nepal to its north, Muzaffarpur to its south, Bettiah and Gopalganj to its west whereas Sitamarhi to its east. The district East-Champaran consists of 6 sub-divisions, viz., Areraj, Chakiya, Motihari, Pakridayal, Raxaul and Sikarhana. Motihari sub-division also consists of 6 blocks, viz., Banjaria, Kotwa, Motihari, Piprakothi, Sugauli and Turkaulia.

Many rivers flow in its district. They are - Gandak, Sikarhana, Bagmati And Lal Bakeya, Tilawe, Kachna, Motia, Tiur and Dhanauti. Among those, the river “Gandak” is unique. It is also called “Narayani” river. Normally round stones are found in this river. Some of its round stones have signs like eyes. Noramlly, people believe that these are the eyes of Hindu God “Vishnu” or “Narayan”. These round stones are worshiped as “Saligram”, normally, in Hindu families.
